Product: Social Media Companies face youth addiction lawsuits in USA

Alphabet (GOOGL.O), which operates Google and YouTube; Meta Platforms (META.O), which operates Facebook and Instagram; ByteDance, which operates TikTok; and Snap (SNAP.N), which operates Snapchat.

The decision covers hundreds of lawsuits filed on behalf of individual children who allegedly suffered negative physical, mental and emotional health effects from social media use including anxiety, depression, and occasionally suicide.

Product:  Mercedes-Benz ,Opel, Nissan, Jaguar Land Rover, Ford, Volvo, Hyundai, Toyota and Mazda were also among defendants in a “group” legal action in the UK.

Motorists are suing the car makers for allegedly deceiving them over emissions standards, which – they argue – has resulted in knocking thousands off the value of their cars.

Overcharging consumers in a legal case

The so-called Loyalty Penalty Claim alleges the operators abused their market positions in charging existing customers more than new ones by failing to reduce the cost of monthly contract payments at the end of the minimum term, meaning those entering new SIM-only deals were being charged less for the same thing, because the handset would have already been paid for by then.

Product: Owners of affected iPhone models (6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, SE, 7, or 7 Plus) may automatically join this collective claim against Apple in the UK.

Hazard:

Slowed down the performance of older iPhones.

The claim alleges that Apple violated UK competition laws by exploiting its dominance through practices that caused harm to UK consumers and businesses. Allegations include “forcing iOS updates that strained iPhone batteries, resulting in increased shutdown risks, introducing a ‘throttling’ function causing significant performance drops, and lacking transparent communication about these issues”.
